Credit Card Points – This is pretty obvious but I can’t tell you how awesome this has been for me and my traveling expenses. I travel a lot and it is SO helpful to have points that can help pay for a flight (and even hotels)! Take advantage of these if you use a credit card! I use the Chase Sapphire Reserve (for business, but it can be used for personal expenses) – it’s MADE for someone who travels – I get $300 in travel credit every year (this is automatically given back after I make a “travel” related purchase with this card, it also includes free TSA Precheck or Global Entry (lifesaver!) and a lounge pass! With the cost of the credit card itself, the lounge pass is totally worth it! Sitting in a quiet place with free food & drinks is so relaxing before or in between flights.
Flight Trackers are Your Best Friend – Hopper, newsletters such as Cheap DFW, Scott’s Cheap Flights, & The Flight deal. Always keep your eyes on these helpful tools so you can make sure you get the BEST deals on flights! I’ll see a great deal, then I’ll buy tickets through my Chase Rewards. This has saved me thousands over the years!
Maps – Waze App (Free Map) – This app is awesome! It is a free map that is on your phone (no crazy foldable maps) and it works globally! This app was super helpful for when my husband and I went to europe and many other places. It is a must have for any type of traveling! You can get to and from a location without using wifi. If you’re not renting a car from the airport, don’t forget to reserve transportation from the airport to the hotel, taxis are usually so much more expensive than a bus or train. Not every place has uber or lyft either.
Evenly Make Plans for Adventure and Relaxation – You just got done with your big day and you are EXHAUSTED! Some couples wait a couple days, weeks, or months to take their honeymoons. Why? So they can save up & recuperate from all of the planning and execution of the day and then enjoy their honeymoon. While you are on your honeymoon, don’t jam pack it with things to do! Have a few things to go do and then save time for relaxing at the resort/hotel or chill on the beach! You don’t want to come back from your honeymoon even more exhausted then have to go to work the next week!
Know What You Want and be Specific – Wherever you go on your honeymoon you will want to thoroughly look through everything you can do! You and your significant other should each make a separate list of the things you want to do and see, then come together and pick two things off of each list. That way each of you get to do something you really want to do and it saves you plenty of time to relax!
Honeymoon Planner – AKA a travel agent that specializes in Honeymoons – If you find your life is too busy to really plan your honeymoon, or you’d rather hear about what you can do vs. doing all the research yourself, then call an agent! Want to know the best part?! They’re free! It will take some stress off of you both and that way you can concentrate even more on the wedding day and just look forward to a fun trip!
Post About Your Plans – Posting about your honeymoon plans will not only get you excited but everyone else too! You may even get some helpful comments from friends who have been where you are going. Plus, bragging rights. 😉
Culture – If you are going somewhere you have never been before, you will want to read up on the culture you are about to step into! One, it will help you understand more, and two, because it is fun! When I went to Costa Rica I read up on the culture and freshened up on my Spanish speaking skills. It was a great thing to do because I was able to communicate with others and understand them with less of a struggle! Translation apps such as Google Translate also really help with any communication barriers, even without wifi – just be sure and download the specific language(s) you’ll need beforehand.
Book Early – (Usually) this is key to getting the best price on your bookings! You really have to watch those flights because one day they could be a great price, but if you decide to wait, they could skyrocket quickly!
Budget – Make sure you are both on the same page for the expenses, but don’t be afraid to splurge! It IS your honeymoon. Enjoy it and don’t worry about spending a little extra on something you really want to do or buy while you’re there. You can even think about things you need for travel and put them on your registry.
Pack Smart – Make a detailed list of everything you will need well in advance of your departure time so you have time to pack and make sure you have EVERYTHING! You need to check the weather months in advance so you can know what type of clothing you need to pack and know you have the proper attire. Also, if where you are going is out of the country, make sure your passport and driver’s license have the same information, such as last name and address! Check to see if the currency is different too! If it is, I suggest getting the cash (for most places) you need weeks before the wedding so you don’t forget! It usually takes banks about 48 hours to get the currency you need. Some places take credit card everywhere you’ll go, but I always read up on the location beforehand. Not everywhere takes credit cards so always check to see what they will take! When I went to Japan, we tried to use our credit card when we were running low on money and they wouldn’t take them and we almost go stranded in the middle of nowhere! So, take it from someone with experience! Haha!
