6 Travel Tips for the Adventurous | Packing List & Recommendations for the Hiker & Mountaineer
I’m no expert when it comes to staying in the mountains or backpacking for days on end. However, I sure do enjoy day hikes and mountain adventures. I’ve hiked around the US, mainly in Colorado & Utah, Peru (the hardest hikes I’ve ever done were to Lake Humantay & Rainbow Mountain), & Iceland to name a few places. So I’ve put together some helpful packing tips and a list of things I carry with me when hiking.
Everything I talk about is linked below, just so you know!
-If you plan to hike, bring real hiking boots, ones that are waterproof & have a good grip on the bottom. To go along with this, thick, wool socks for winter, or just thick socks or a couple pairs of regular socks in the summer. Oh, and do yourself a huge favor and break in your boots before going on a 5 mile hike. Otherwise, you’ll regret ever going on said hike. These are both great: these or these.
–Dry bag! This will come in so handy if it ever rains on you or you are going near waterfalls. I’ve carried my camera and phone in mine and it’s been great – even for taking on a boat or something, these are great.
-Have a good source of water: either a couple foldable water bottles or a Camelbak are definitely needed on long hikes. Especially those like me where I’ll drink a TON of water.
-Wear layers (and have something to put them in if you take them off while hiking): For hikes, I typically have several shirt layers, a light jacket under a heavier jacket, & two pants layers. Check the forcast & travel tips for where you’re going, of course. When I hiked on a glacier, I had too many layers and got hot! You just never know! Of course, don’t forget hat, scarf, gloves, & good socks, like these or these.
–Collapsible Trekking Poles: Every time I’ve done a guided hike, they have collapsible trekking poles, but if you feel you need some on a non-guided tour, I suggest getting some you can easily travel with.
-In case you’re staying somewhere without heat, get a good blanket! When traveling through New Zealand in a camper van, my down-filled, compact blanket came in SO handy and kept me warm in the cooler areas we camped!
I’d love to know what you thought was most helpful or something you’d like to see in a future blog post – share it below!
